With more than thirty years at the frontier of underwater cinematography, Adam Ravetch has more than a few stories to tell.

He’s filmed around the globe, but the Arctic is where he’s made his mark - a career punctuated by multiple filmmaking firsts, which seem to have been willed into existence by talent, grit, and a healthy dose of calculated risk.

On the very typical experience of swimming with a 500 kg polar bear in near-freezing water, Adam says:

“When a polar bear is coming at you in the water, and you slip beneath the surface, camera in hand, all you can do is trust. Trust your instincts, and trust the encounter. Make sure you’re recording! And trust that everything will work out. I always view those experiences as such an honour, to be able to share this magnificent animal’s world with them.”

Thankfully for Adam, these encounters did all work out. He’s gone on to be the first person to film a narwhal hunting Arctic cod with its tusk. He was on the first expedition to swim under the ice with 500-year-old Greenland sharks. He discovered the birthing grounds of eastern Atlantic walruses. He’s directed Arctic feature docs, IMAX films, won Emmys and Explorer’s Club Awards.

And now, in 2026, he’s got another milestone to add to the list: the first cinematographer to make not just one, but TWO separate sales on DenSyte!

We’re not here to say where this latest achievement ranks in a long career marked by such accolades, but we’re grateful to have Adam and his beautiful footage inside the Den!

Both James and I have been fortunate enough to work with Adam on multiple occasions, first in 2015 and again in 2021 for Island of the Sea Wolves. Then in 2022, James joined Adam at the floe edge for the Baffin Island episode of Islands: Nature’s Wild Laboratories, which I produced.

There are few shoots that are as productive as that one was. Under the expert direction of their local Inuit guides, James and Adam (along with Sam Ellis) came away with nearly half an episode’s worth of material.

Polar bears, narwhals, belugas, migrating seabirds, shifting ice…they got it all!

James himself will tell you that having someone as experienced and as knowledgeable as Adam on the shoot was a game-changer.

“Adam’s deep experience in the Arctic and the relationships he’s built with the Inuit gave me a window into a world on the ice that has since become one of my favourite places on Earth,” says James

Based in Los Angeles and trained in marine zoology, Adam has been pulled back to the Arctic every year for over 30 years. With credits across every broadcaster and streamer imaginable, to say this knowledge is hard-earned is somewhat of an understatement.

He can tell you how to control your breathing when submerging into subzero waters, sure, but he can also tell you what makes a shot work, and just as importantly, what makes a shot sell.

Before DenSyte, Adam was selling stock footage for decades.

“I’ve spent so much time now building my archive,” Adam says. “It’s been a great source of passive income for me.”

Adam continues, “My advice to any filmmaker building their stock archive is the same: do your best to get the shots that only you can get. Whether that’s the pond at your local park, or diving in the High Arctic, the footage that only you can get is going to be the most valuable. If it’s unique and unusual, it’s going to sell! Then it’s just about getting eyeballs on it. Which is why DenSyte - a filmmaker-focused stock platform feels like exactly what we need!”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Your footage shouldn’t be sitting on a hard drive. It should be working for the people who shot it, and keep reaching new audiences.

Congratulations, Adam. Two down. Here’s to the next one!
